According to Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli, Miranda can play as a designated hitter, but is difficult to throw.
Miranda had planned to represent Puerto Rico at the 2023 WBC, but he had no choice but to drop out.
“I had a conversation with Miranda today. He really wants to compete in the WBC, but he knows he can’t compete in the current contest,” Minnesota coach Baldelli said.
Miranda, who entered the big leagues last year, recorded a batting average of 0.268, 15 home runs and 66 RBIs in 125 games.
Ahead of his second season in the major leagues, his shoulder pain became a variable, and he could not relax. Coach Baldelli expects Miranda to be able to recover by the start of the regular season.
Meanwhile, Puerto Rico lost Miranda following Carlos Correa (Minnesota).
Correa decided not to attend the tournament after much consideration as his wife’s due date for the second child coincided with the national team’s group stage period.
Puerto Rico are tied in Group D with the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Israel.
